How do you loose weight quickly without the need to run?

I feel as though I have gained a lot of weight. I know what the problem is and how to stop, I just don’t want to resolve the problem by going for a run. I can’t afford to buy a treadmill and I don’t feel secure running around the block because of the people I live near, there not exactly encouraging. Does anyone know any good weight loss tips or tricks that they can share with me to help me loose a few pounds or the fat off my stomach which I am embarrassed about.
